how to use hard drive backup tools
Windows 10 and 11 both have built-in backup tools that can be used to create a backup of your hard drive. Here's how to use them:
- Open the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) tool
- In Windows 10, click the Start menu, type "backup" in the search box, and select "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" from the list of results.
- In Windows 11, click the Start button, then click on "Settings", select "System" and then click "Storage". On the right-hand side of the window, click on "Advanced storage settings" and then select "Backup options".
- Set up a backup
- Click on "Set up backup" to start the backup wizard.
- Select the drive you want to back up to (such as an external hard drive), and click "Next".
- Choose what you want to back up (either "Let me choose" or "Let Windows choose"), and click "Next".
- Review your backup settings and click "Save settings and run backup" to start the backup.
- Restore files from a backup
- To restore files from a backup, open the Backup and Restore tool again, and click on "Restore my files".
- Select the files you want to restore, and click "Next".
- Choose where you want to restore the files to, and click "Next".
- Review your restore settings, and click "Finish" to start the restore.
Alternatively, you can also use the newer Windows File Recovery tool that is available for Windows 10 and 11. Here's how to use it:
Download and install the Windows File Recovery tool from the Microsoft Store.
Open the Windows File Recovery tool and select the type of files you want to recover (such as documents, photos, videos, or music).
Choose the location where you want to search for the deleted files (such as a specific drive or folder).
Start the scan and wait for the tool to find the deleted files.
Select the files you want to recover, and choose where you want to save them.
Video Demonstration – Back up and Restore (6.5 min) Hello everyone, we are here to talk about backing up and restoring files on our computer. So let's get started here in Windows 10. I'm going to right click on my start button and we're heading over to Settings. Now when we get inside of settings we're going to scroll down, and we're going to click on Update and Security. It's where the important stuff is, including backing up your files. So inside of Update and Security, right in here we're going to click on this button called Backup. And when we click on Backup we can watch the right side of our screen propagate, and look at that. Back up using File History. Now File History is a really cool tool here inside of Windows 10, it allows us to back up our files to another drive. Keyword, another drive. What that means is we're not going to back up our files inside of our C drive to another folder in our C drive. We're going to back up our files from one hard disk to another completely different hard disk. Or, from our hard disk to a USB flash drive, or we can even use file history to back up from our hard disk to a network location. We can even do cloud storage. It is cool.
